When I was six years old, my mother was given an old piano and I very soon started playing tunes by ear. Two years later, I began taking piano lessons with a teacher who encouraged me to play music I enjoyed and believed in my ability to learn any piece I set my mind to. Over the years I completed several music exams, including the ABRSM grade 8 in both theory and practical as well as the ABRSM diploma in piano performance.
In 2002-2005, I studied music history and performance at the University of Southampton. I took the maximum amount of performance units, both as a soloist and as part of a chamber music ensemble. In my final year I received a prize for the best performance of a solo keyboard work by Liszt. I then went on to pursue a Masters degree in music research and performance. My research focused on Franz Liszt’s operatic transcriptions during his virtuoso period. As part of my studies, I held a piano recital at the Turner Sims which included Liszt’s transcription of Bellini’s opera Norma.
Although I come from a classical background, I have a varied taste in music that spans across genres such as jazz, pop, rock, blues and Latin music. What I love about the piano is its versatility. It can play any style of music, it can be played solo or as part of an ensemble, and it can produce a wide range of sounds. Although the piano is a single instrument, it is sometimes referred to as a miniature orchestra and I’m always on the look out for good piano arrangements of your favourite piece of music.
As a teacher, I have experience instructing students of all ages and levels, from beginners to advanced. Over the years, I have taught many pupils, from their early years to the time they leave for university. I love sharing and hearing about your favourite music, and finding the best way to help you achieve your goals and overcome any challenges. I look forward to meeting you!
