PIANO TUITION

I conduct piano lessons from my music studio located in Talbot village, Wallisdown. I have both an acoustic piano (Kemble upright) and a digital piano (Yamaha CPS).

Typically, lessons run from 30-60 minutes, with at least a 10-15 minute break between pupils. For more information on lesson fees, see here

So, whether you are a complete beginner (it’s never too late to learn!), coming back to lessons after a break or wanting to progress to the next level, give me a call and we can arrange a free trial lesson.

MUSIC THEORY & EXAM PREPARATION

While it’s possible to be a performer without an extensive knowledge of music theory, understanding the principles and concepts behind music can greatly enhance a performer’s abilities. Understanding the language of music helps us to better interpret musical scores, improvise, memorise, compose, collaborate with other musicians, and develop a deeper understanding of music as a whole.

For those familiar with the ABRSM, it is important to note that to participate in practical exams ranging from grades 6 to 8, passing grade 5 in music theory or practical musicianship is a prerequisite. This entails an understanding of various topics such as rhythm, melody, scales, key signatures, transposition, sight-reading, aural skills and music history.

Although practical lessons generally cover music theory to some extent, some of you may wish to take additional lessons specifically for this purpose. It is also possible that some students are receiving instrumental lessons from another teacher and require supplementary assistance with theory and aural tests. Past students have included violinists, singers, and guitarists.

Not all of my students choose to take exams, but for those who do, there are several music schools and examination boards to choose from. The music exam boards listed below have exams that are recognised by Ofqual, meaning that students can earn UCAS points in grades 6-8.
